Microsuction
Microsuction uses a small, specialised suction device to remove wax under direct visual guidance.
As it does not rely on flushing the ear with water, it may be suitable in situations where irrigation would be inappropriate. Tim will assess individual suitability before treatment.
Ear irrigation
Irrigation uses a controlled flow of body-temperature water to help remove suitable softened wax from the ear canal.
It is only offered where appropriate, following checks for relevant ear conditions and medical history.
Manual wax removal
Manual removal uses specialist instruments to carefully remove accessible wax while the ear canal is examined directly.
It can be particularly useful for certain types or positions of wax, sometimes alongside another removal method.
Video otoscopy
Video otoscopy allows Tim to examine the ear canal and eardrum using a small camera and display.
It helps document visible ear health findings and allows you to see what Tim is looking at before and after treatment.
All methods carry some risk, including temporary discomfort, dizziness or irritation. Less commonly, bleeding, infection or damage to the ear may occur. Tim explains relevant risks and checks suitability before proceeding.
A little preparation can make treatment easier.
Firm or dry wax can sometimes be more difficult to remove. Where suitable, softening the wax beforehand may help.
Olive-oil ear drops or an appropriate ear wax softener may be recommended for several days before your appointment.
If you have previously had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, grommets, discharge or other ear problems, seek appropriate advice before using ear drops.
Do not try to remove wax using cotton buds or other objects inserted into the ear canal. These can push wax further in or cause injury.

If no wax is present, the £40 consultation fee applies instead of the standard £90 wax removal charge. Tim will explain the visible ear health findings and recommend further assessment where appropriate.
Can both ears be treated at the same appointment?
Yes. The standard £90 home wax removal fee covers one or both ears where treatment is appropriate.
Will all the wax be removed in one appointment?
Often wax can be removed during a single visit. However, very firm or impacted wax may require further softening and another appointment. Tim will discuss the outcome and any next steps.
Should I use ear drops before the appointment?

Can you visit someone in a care home?

What if my hearing still seems reduced after wax removal?
Ear wax is only one possible cause of reduced hearing. If hearing difficulties remain following treatment, Tim can discuss whether a comprehensive hearing assessment is appropriate. Sudden hearing loss requires urgent medical assessment.
