UNDERSTANDING YOUR EAR HEALTH

Blocked ears? First find the cause.

Ear wax is normal and helps protect the ear canal. Most of the time it clears naturally without treatment.

Sometimes it accumulates and causes muffled hearing, fullness or discomfort. However, a blocked sensation does not always mean wax is present.

Tim begins by asking about your symptoms and relevant ear health history before examining the ears.

If wax removal is appropriate, microsuction, irrigation or manual removal may be used, depending on your individual circumstances.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Should you use ear drops?

If wax is firm or dry, suitable wax-softening drops may make removal easier.

Olive-oil preparations are commonly used, although the product and duration should reflect your individual ear health.

Not everybody needs to use drops beforehand. If you're unsure, Tim can advise.

If you've had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, grommets or ear discharge, seek appropriate advice before using drops.
