Blocked ears? Wax may be the cause.
Ear wax is completely normal. It helps protect the skin of the ear canal and usually works its way out naturally.
Sometimes wax collects faster than it clears, forming a blockage that affects hearing or causes discomfort.
This can be especially troublesome if you wear hearing aids, as wax may interfere with sound reaching the eardrum or contribute to problems with the devices.
Not every blocked sensation is caused by ear wax. An examination is the first step towards identifying what's happening.
Different ears. Different approaches.
South Coast Hearing provides several professional ear wax removal methods in Chichester. Tim selects an appropriate technique after examining your ears and discussing your medical history.
Microsuction
Microsuction uses a small specialist suction device to remove ear wax while the ear is viewed directly.
It does not require water to flush out the ear canal. This may make it preferable to irrigation in some circumstances.
Tim will assess whether it is suitable for your ears.
Ear irrigation
Irrigation uses a controlled flow of body-temperature water to help clear suitable, softened ear wax.
It may be useful for certain types of blockage, but it is not appropriate for everyone.
Your ear history and examination findings determine whether irrigation can be offered.
Manual removal
Manual removal involves carefully extracting accessible wax using appropriate specialist instruments.
It can be useful for certain wax positions or as part of a combined treatment approach.
As with every method, the ear is assessed before proceeding.
All wax-removal methods have potential risks, including discomfort, irritation, dizziness, bleeding or, less commonly, injury to the ear. Tim explains relevant risks and checks suitability before treatment.
From examination to reassurance.
An ear wax appointment should begin with understanding the problem, not immediately attempting treatment.
Tim will ask about your symptoms, previous ear problems and any factors that could influence the choice of removal method.
Video otoscopy may be used to examine the ear canal and visible eardrum, helping you see the wax or other visible findings on screen.
If wax removal is suitable, treatment can be undertaken during the visit. Afterwards, Tim will explain the result and whether any further care is needed.
Check your ear health
An ear health history and careful examination help establish whether wax is present and what treatment may be suitable.
Explain the options
Tim discusses the recommended method, relevant risks and what to expect before obtaining consent.
Treat and review
Suitable wax removal is followed by a further check where possible and practical advice about next steps.
No need to travel into the city.
A home wax-removal appointment can be especially useful if travelling into Chichester, arranging parking or leaving the house is difficult.
Tim brings suitable equipment directly to your home, whether you're in the city itself or one of the surrounding communities.
Appointments may also be arranged for people who are housebound, have limited mobility or simply prefer treatment in familiar surroundings.
“Tim was fantastic. I suffer quite badly with anxiety and I knew I needed to get it done. Tim really eased this and went at a pace suited for me. You don’t realise how much you needed it done till it’s done. The best part was that it was done from my home and so by the time it came to it, I felt totally relaxed. Definitely recommend Tim. Thanks Tim :)”
Ear wax removal across the Chichester area.
South Coast Hearing offers home wax-removal visits across Chichester and neighbouring communities. Tim covers both central residential areas and nearby villages.
Other nearby areas
Visits may also be available around Whyke, Stockbridge, Westgate, North Mundham, Hunston and nearby communities, subject to availability.
This isn't an exhaustive list. If you live outside Chichester itself, send Tim your postcode to check whether a home appointment can be arranged.
Any additional travel charge will be discussed before booking.
Ask about your location →Do you need to use ear drops first?
Sometimes, but not always. Hard or dry ear wax can be more difficult to remove, and softening it beforehand may help.
Olive-oil ear drops or an appropriate wax-softening product may be recommended for several days, depending on your ear health.
There's no need to automatically use a particular product for two weeks before every visit. If you're unsure what to use, ask Tim for advice.
If you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, previous ear surgery or current ear discharge, seek appropriate clinical advice before using drops.
A few practical points
There's no special equipment you need to supply for your home appointment. A comfortable seat and a suitable space for treatment are helpful.
Avoid inserting cotton buds or other objects into your ears. They can push wax deeper or damage the ear canal.
If you wear hearing aids, have them available so Tim can understand any difficulties you're experiencing.
When not to wait: Sudden hearing loss requires urgent medical assessment, even if your ear feels blocked. Significant pain, discharge or bleeding should also be medically assessed.
Know the cost before booking.
Chichester home wax removal appointments follow South Coast Hearing's standard home-visit pricing.
The standard £90 treatment fee covers one or both ears where removal is appropriate.
If examination shows no wax is present, the £40 consultation fee applies instead.
These are home-visit charges. Any additional travel requirements or follow-up arrangements are discussed before booking where applicable.
Questions before booking your visit?
Can I book microsuction at home in Chichester?
Yes. Tim offers home visit microsuction in Chichester where clinically appropriate. An examination is carried out first to confirm whether wax is present and which removal method is most suitable.
Is ear syringing the same as irrigation?
People sometimes use the term ear syringing when referring to water-based wax removal. Modern electronic irrigation uses controlled water flow, rather than a traditional hand syringe. It is offered only when suitable for your ears.
How much does private ear wax removal cost in Chichester?
South Coast Hearing's standard home wax removal fee is £90 for one or both ears. If no wax is present, the home consultation costs £40 instead.
What if my ears feel blocked but there is no wax?
Tim will explain the visible findings and advise whether further assessment is appropriate. A blocked sensation can have several possible causes, so unnecessary wax removal is not carried out.
Do I have to use olive oil before microsuction?
Not always. Wax-softening drops can help in some situations, particularly where wax is firm or impacted. What is appropriate depends on your ear health and history. Ask Tim if you're unsure how to prepare.
Can ear wax cause problems with hearing aids?
Yes. Wax in the ear canal can affect how sound reaches the eardrum, while wax can also obstruct hearing aid receivers or earmould openings. If difficulties continue after the wax has been addressed, further hearing aid checks may be useful.
Do you cover Bosham, Fishbourne and Tangmere?
Home visits may be arranged in these communities and other nearby areas around Chichester, subject to availability. Provide your postcode when enquiring so Tim can confirm arrangements.
What if the wax cannot all be removed in one appointment?
Occasionally wax is too firm or difficult to access safely during one appointment. Tim will explain the outcome and advise whether further softening, a follow-up visit or another form of care is needed. Follow-up consultation pricing is £40.
