What to expect from an appointment

A consultation to remove wax will involve a visit from our friendly & professional audiologist who will perform video otoscopy to fully assess the condition of your ears. If wax is discovered and able to be removed, we will use either one or a combination of microsuction, irrigation and manual removal to safely clear the ear canals. This will be followed by video otoscopy again to check the condition of the ears and to confirm that the wax is clear and that all is healthy. We recommend Earol to be used 2 weeks prior to a wax removal appointment which will ensure that any wax present is sufficiently soft, for easy and safe removal. Earol can be purchased online or at most pharmacies.

What is…

  • Video otoscopy is a procedure used to examine the ear canal and eardrum in detail. Using a small camera connected to a screen, we can safely visualise the condition of your ears in real time. This allows for accurate assessment before and after wax removal, helping you to understand your ear health and see the results for yourself.

  • A safe, effective method of removing ear wax using a gentle medical suction device. Unlike water-based methods, it doesn’t involve liquids, making it ideal for those with sensitive ears or a history of ear problems. Under direct visual guidance, the procedure is quick, comfortable, and performed with precision to ensure your ears are clear and healthy.

  • Ear irrigation uses a controlled stream of warm water to flush out excess wax from the ear canal. It's a gentle and effective method, often used when wax is soft and free-moving. The process is quick and comfortable, and we always assess your ears beforehand to ensure irrigation is safe and appropriate for you.

  • Manual wax removal involves the careful use of specialist tools such as curettes or forceps to extract wax directly from the ear canal. This precise technique is especially useful for removing small, stubborn pieces of wax or foreign objects. Performed under visual guidance, it ensures minimal discomfort and maximum safety.
