IS IT REALLY EAR WAX?

A blocked feeling doesn't always mean a wax blockage.

Ear wax normally protects the ear canal and gradually clears naturally.

Occasionally it builds up and causes reduced hearing clarity, fullness or discomfort.

But ears can feel blocked for other reasons, and a sudden change in hearing should never automatically be attributed to wax.

Tim examines the ears before recommending removal. If there is no wax, he can explain the visible findings and whether further assessment would help.

YOUR HOME APPOINTMENT

A closer look, then suitable treatment.

Tim begins by discussing your symptoms and relevant ear health history. He then examines the ear canals using otoscopy or video otoscopy as appropriate.

If wax is present and removal is suitable, Tim may use microsuction, controlled irrigation or manual instruments.

Not every method is right for every person. The condition of the ear, medical history and type of wax all matter.

The procedure, relevant risks and expected outcome are explained before proceeding with your consent.

HEARING AIDS & RECURRING WAX

When clearing wax is only part of the answer.

A blocked ear can make existing hearing difficulties seem worse.

For someone who uses hearing aids, wax can cause problems both inside the ear canal and on the hearing aid itself.

As an audiologist, Tim can discuss whether symptoms suggest a wax problem, a hearing aid issue or the need for a more detailed hearing assessment.

A PATIENT'S EXPERIENCE

Ear care that puts you at ease.

It's understandable to feel apprehensive about having your ears treated, particularly if you're unsure what to expect.

Tim explains the process, listens to any concerns and works at a pace appropriate for you.

“Tim was fantastic. I suffer quite badly with anxiety and I knew I needed to get it done. Tim really eased this and went at a pace suited for me. The best part was that it was done from my home and so by the time it came to it, I felt totally relaxed.”

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Should you soften the wax first?

Sometimes. Firm or dry wax can be harder to remove, and suitable wax-softening drops may make treatment easier.

Olive-oil drops or another suitable product may be recommended for several days beforehand.

There's no universal requirement to use Earol for two weeks. The right preparation depends on your ears.

If you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, previous ear surgery or ear discharge, seek appropriate advice before using drops.

Standard home wax removal costs £90 for one or both ears. If no wax is present, the home consultation fee is £40.

What if my ears feel blocked but there is no wax?

Tim will explain the visible ear health findings and discuss suitable next steps. Blocked sensations can have causes other than wax. Sudden hearing loss requires urgent medical assessment.

Is microsuction always the best way to remove wax?

Not necessarily. Microsuction, irrigation and manual removal each have different uses and precautions. Tim considers the condition of your ears, the wax and relevant history before advising.

Do I need olive oil drops before treatment?

Not always. Suitable drops may help soften firm or dry wax, but preparation depends on your ear health. Ask Tim if you're unsure whether drops are suitable.

Can ear wax affect hearing aids?

Yes. Wax inside the ear can affect hearing, while wax on a hearing aid may obstruct a filter, receiver or earmould. Tim can discuss whether a hearing aid check is also needed.

Can you visit a care home or supported accommodation?

Suitable home ear care can be arranged for care-home residents and people living in supported settings. Contact Tim to discuss the address, circumstances and practical arrangements.

How soon can I arrange an appointment?

Appointment availability varies. You can request a home visit online or contact Tim directly. Bookings are confirmed after availability has been reviewed.
