Professional ear care, without travelling.
When your ears feel blocked or hearing seems reduced, arranging a journey to a clinic may be inconvenient.
Tim brings specialist equipment to your home, including tools for examining the ears and suitable wax removal.
A home appointment can be particularly useful if you find travelling difficult, need a relative's support or prefer being seen in your own surroundings.
You don't need to be housebound to request a home visit.
Is ear wax really the cause?
Ear wax is normal. It helps protect the ear canal and usually moves out naturally.
Sometimes it builds up and becomes impacted, causing fullness, discomfort or muffled hearing.
However, an ear can feel blocked even when no wax is present. Hearing difficulties can have other causes.
Tim examines both ears before recommending removal. If the ears are clear, he explains the visible findings and discusses whether further assessment is appropriate.
First examine, then decide how to treat.
Your appointment begins with a discussion of your symptoms and relevant ear health history.
Tim examines the ear canals using otoscopy or video otoscopy where appropriate.
If wax is present, Tim considers whether removal is suitable and explains the recommended approach.
Treatment may involve microsuction, controlled irrigation or manual removal, depending on the condition of the wax and your ears.
Tim explains the relevant risks before obtaining consent and proceeding.

Do you need ear drops beforehand?
Not always. Firm or dry wax can sometimes be easier to remove after suitable softening.
Olive-oil drops or another appropriate preparation may be recommended for several days, depending on your ear health.
There is no universal requirement to use Earol for two weeks. If you're unsure, ask Tim before your appointment.
If you've had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, grommets or ear discharge, seek appropriate clinical advice before using drops.
What if your hearing still seems reduced?
Removing impacted wax may improve hearing when wax caused the difficulty.
However, hearing problems can have other causes, so improvement following wax removal cannot be guaranteed.
As an audiologist, Tim can discuss whether a more comprehensive hearing assessment or other review is appropriate.
South Coast Hearing also provides hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings and continuing aftercare at home.

Do I need olive oil or Earol before treatment?
Not always. Suitable wax-softening drops may help with firm or dry wax, but preparation depends on your ear health. Seek advice before using drops if you've had ear surgery, grommets, a perforated eardrum or discharge.
Is microsuction better than ear irrigation?
Neither method is automatically best for everyone. Tim considers the ear examination, wax characteristics and relevant history before advising which method is suitable.
What if my ears feel blocked but there's no wax?
Tim will explain the visible findings and advise whether further assessment is appropriate. The £40 no-wax consultation charge applies to standard home appointments. Sudden hearing loss requires urgent medical assessment.
Will removing wax improve my hearing?
Hearing may improve when impacted wax was causing the difficulty. However, hearing loss can have other causes, so an improvement cannot be guaranteed.
