UNDERSTANDING EAR WAX

Is wax the reason your hearing feels different?

Ear wax is a normal part of ear health. It helps protect the ear canal and usually clears naturally.

Sometimes wax accumulates and causes muffled hearing, fullness or a blocked sensation.

However, not every blocked sensation or change in hearing is caused by wax.

Tim examines the ears before recommending removal, so the appointment is based on what is actually present rather than an assumption.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The right approach for your ears.

Tim begins with a discussion of your symptoms and relevant ear health history.

He then examines the ears, using otoscopy or video otoscopy as appropriate.

If wax is present and removal is suitable, Tim will explain the recommended method, what to expect and any relevant risks before obtaining your consent.

Depending on your ear health and the condition of the wax, treatment may involve microsuction, controlled irrigation or manual removal.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE

Professional care with a personal touch.

Whether attending a local clinic or arranging a home visit, feeling comfortable with your audiologist matters.

Here's how one patient described their experience with South Coast Hearing.

“Tim is very professional, polite and also has a great sense of humour. Overall a very good and convenient experience. Highly recommended!”
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Should you use ear drops beforehand?

Sometimes. Wax that is firm or dry can be more difficult to remove.

Suitable wax-softening drops, including appropriate olive-oil preparations, may help before treatment.

However, not everyone needs to use drops for the same period of time. Preparation should reflect your ear health.

If you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, previous ear surgery or ear discharge, seek appropriate advice before using drops.

MORE THAN EAR WAX REMOVAL

What if your hearing still seems reduced?

Removing impacted wax may improve hearing when wax is responsible for the difficulty.

But hearing changes can have other causes, and removing wax does not guarantee better hearing.

As an audiologist, Tim can explain whether a more comprehensive hearing assessment would be worthwhile.

The East Preston clinic also provides hearing assessments, independent hearing aid advice and ongoing aftercare.

A home appointment may be more practical for someone who finds travelling difficult, needs assistance or prefers treatment in familiar surroundings.

Tim can arrange suitable ear care appointments in care homes, retirement accommodation and supported living settings.

Where appropriate, relatives and care staff can help coordinate the visit.

Is microsuction always the best method?

Not necessarily. Microsuction, irrigation and manual removal have different indications and precautions. Tim recommends a suitable method after examining the ears and considering your history.

Not always. Suitable wax-softening drops may help with firm or dry wax, but preparation depends on your ear health. Seek appropriate advice before using drops if you've had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, grommets or discharge.
